Maid-Rite Sliders

The Origin of Maid-Rite

The origin of the Maid-Rite sandwich has sparked some debate. Residents of Newton, IA claim it started there, but according to Wikipedia, a butcher from Muscatine, IA created the famous Iowa Maid-Rite Sandwich, also known as a “loose meat sandwich.” Instead of forming the meat into a patty, it resembles a sloppy joe.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/2 small white onion, finely chopped
  • 1 beef bouillon cube
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 12 slider buns
  • 1/3 cup dill pickle slices
  • 6 slices American cheese

FOR THE BUTTER SAUCE

  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions for Making Maid-Rite Sliders

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large skillet, combine the ground beef and onion. Cook over medium-high heat, breaking the meat apart as it browns.
  3. If necessary, drain any excess grease. Then add the bouillon cube, water, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the liquid has nearly evaporated.
  4. In a baking dish, place the bottoms of the buns and top with the beef mixture. Add pickles and cheese slices, then place the tops of the buns on.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Brush this mixture over the tops of the buns.
  6. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Enjoy!
